Songblog: Throne (Bring Me the Horizon cover)

"Throne" by Bring Me the Horizon, 2015

I've been meaning to do a cover of this song for a while- and since I'm going to a BMTH concert tonight, now seemed like a good time. This song just really grabs hold of me. It's both a sort of homage and a "screw you" to someone who hurt and abandoned you. A way of saying that what they did broke you, but you rebuilt yourself stronger, and to this day, the memory of that person makes you fight harder for the good things in life.

You may have seen/heard this song on my blog before--I included it on my list "10 Songs to Inspire You," and in that post mentioned that my favorite line is "I forgive you; you are the reason I still fight."

That line stood out to me the most, not just because it's a profound and beautiful line (personally, I think Bring Me the Horizon has a knack for profound and beautiful lines). The first verse is a sort of reminder to that person of their guilt (if they have any). But the second verse invokes humbleness.

It takes humility, and a certain sense of self-love to forgive.

You might think this song only has that "screw you" vibe, especially in the bridge when the lyrics are "I'll leave you choking on every word you left unspoken."

But they're not saying they want the other person to choke. Leaving things unsaid is often what hurts us the most, so being able to forgive and move on from that is a big deal. Sometimes we don't get the answers we deserve, and choosing to walk away from that silence--for yourself--is an empowering thing.

To rebuild in spite of someone else's lack of decency, consideration, empathy, or love, and to forgive someone who might not deserve it--that's how you move on. And forgiveness doesn't mean that you're okay with what happened, it just means you no longer hold that person responsible for your pain; it means you don't let what they did or how they made you feel control you anymore.

You forgave, but you don't have to forget completely; in fact, you're recycling all that hurt and building something amazing out of it. Maybe that person will never know about all the amazing things you've done, or about how you've changed, but if you've moved on, you won't mind.

You'll be sitting on your throne, happy with yourself, and the people who actually care about you.

Lyrics:

Remember the moment you left me alone and Broke every promise you ever made I was an ocean, lost in the open Nothing could take the pain away

So you can throw me to the wolves Tomorrow I will come back Leader of the whole pack Beat me black and blue Every wound will shape me Every scar will build my throne

The sticks and the stones that You used to throw have Built me an empire So don't even try To cry me a river 'Cause I forgive you You are the reason I still fight

So you can throw me to the wolves Tomorrow I will come back Leader of the whole pack Beat me black and blue Every wound will shape me Every scar will build my throne

So you can throw me to the wolves Tomorrow I will come back Leader of the whole pack Beat me black and blue Every wound will shape me Every scar will build my throne

I'll leave you choking On every word you left unspoken Rebuild all that you've broken And now you know I'll leave you choking On every word you left unspoken Rebuild all that you've broken And now you know Every wound will shape me Every scar will build my throne

So you can throw me to the wolves Tomorrow I will come back Leader of the whole pack Beat me black and blue Every wound will shape me Every scar will build my throne
