Songblog: Hurts So Good

"Hurts So Good" written by Devin Gackle, Winter 2012

Second chances. Not everyone believes in them.

Personally, I think it's closed-minded not to. Especially when it comes to people--if you and/or someone else has made a mistake, it's never too late to make it right. I don't think it matters how much time has gone by; if you need to apologize to someone, do it. Both of you will feel better.

And if you need to forgive, do it. Because not forgiving only holds you back, and means that whatever you haven't forgiven still controls part of your life. You don't want that.

Emotions can be hard. And in a way, that's what this song is about. Because when you face your emotions head on, it can hurt. It either hurts in a good way, or hurts in a sad way and ends up feeling good later.

Another element to this song is that pain is often a reminder that you're alive, that you feel something. So even though in the situation of the song one person wants to try and the other doesn't, the hurting both people probably feel is a subtle reminder that they're human. And it's okay to feel.

And even though second chances are also hard, it's okay to believe in them, too. It doesn't mean picking up where you left off, or that things would be the same as they were before. It just means learning some humility, learning something new, and moving on a little differently.

Random fun fact: I played this song live on a radio station (WRLR 98.3 FM) a few years ago :)

Lyrics:

I almost thought we were

A little be closer

To making things right

Yeah I really thought we would make it through this time

I don't wanna say goodbye

It just wouldn't be the same

Without you by my side

So I'm silently screaming your name

'Cause I can't watch you walk away

I don't wanna give up everything

You were so close to remembering

I have never wanted anything

More than this

I never was any good

At saying what's on my mind

I can't find the words

Just don't let this be our last goodbye

'Cause I can't watch you walk away again

I don't wanna give up everything

You were so close to remembering

I have never wanted anything

More than this

And it hurts so good

Yeah it hurts so good

I don't wanna give up everything

You were so close to remembering

I have never wanted anything

I don't wanna give up everything

You were so close to remembering

I have never wanted anything

More than this

More than this
