Songblog: Don't Waste Your Breath
"Don't Waste Your Breath" written by Devin Gackle, August/September 2015
Relationships shouldn't define you, or who you are. I've always considered myself an individual person, especially since I enjoy my solitude, but it actually took me a while to realize this.
It also took me a while to realize two halves don't make a whole. Each half is a whole on its own; the two together make a unit. And a unit is supposed to work together, not against each other.
The thing is, I am a quiet, introverted, often shy and awkward person. And I've gotten used to people telling me something is wrong with me. Including myself. I've gotten used to thinking I'm the weak half of the unit.
And to that I say: Don't waste your breath.
This song is about standing up for yourself, about knowing you don't have to prove anything to anyone. It's about being kind of beat up, and having all those negative thoughts whispering in your ear, but standing on your own two feet despite it all.
You are who you are, and there's nothing wrong with that. No one can take that from you.
So let it out. Don't hold yourself back. Just be.
Lyrics:
And here I was thinking I didn't deserve you
When all along it was you who didn't deserve me
This vulture at my ear keeps making excuses
But I know better now, yeah I know better now
Don't waste your breath
I'm picking up where you left off
You seem to think you have the right to push me around
Don't close your eyes
You don't want to miss the surprise
Now I'm back on my feet and you can't bring me down
And here I was thinking I was the one to blame
When all along it was you who thought I had to change
This digger at my grave keeps trying to bury me
But I can fight back now, yeah I can fight back now
Don't waste your breath
I'm picking up where you left off
You seem to think you have the right to push me around
Don't close your eyes
You don't want to miss the surprise
Now I'm back on my feet and you can't bring me down
My heart is black and blue
Cuz I'm not over you
But I don't have to prove myself
Don't waste your breath
I'm picking up where you left off
You seem to think you have the right to push me around
Don't close your eyes
You don't want to miss the surprise
Now I'm back on my feet and you can't bring me down
Don't waste your breath
