Songblog: Come Little Children (Erutan cover)

“Come Little Children” by Erutan, c2009

In celebration of the whimsical magic of All Hallow’s Eve, I decided to do a cover of a cover of a song that originally only had one verse.

Yep, I’m talking about that song, sung by Sarah Jessica Parker in Hocus Pocus (arguably the greatest Halloween movie ever.)

The song dubbed “Garden of Magic” by fans of Hocus Pocus is one that I myself have always been a fan of - you bet I sing along with it every time I watch my all-time favorite Halloween movie!

So imagine my delight when I discovered a delightful and unique cover called “Come Little Children” by Erutan on Spotify—finally, something I could add to a playlist! Though Spotify lists the release year as 2013, Erutan Music on YouTube (a.k.a. Kate Covington) posted the cover in 2009.

The original song from the movie, for those who are wondering, was composed by James Horner, lyrics by Brock Walsh; I wonder if they could have guessed how popular and beloved that single verse would become.

One of the reasons I love the original song and this cover is because it is so hauntingly beautiful, in both words and melody. And I am a sucker for a combination of magical words and melodies.

It also probably helps that Halloween is my favorite holiday.

So, Happy Halloween everyone!!!

Lyrics:

Come little children, I’ll take thee away

Into a land of enchantment

Come little children, the time’s come to play

Here in my garden of shadows

Follow sweet children, I’ll show thee the way

Through all the pain and the sorrows

Weep not poor children, for life is this way

Murdering beauty and passions

Hush now dear children, it must be this way

To weary of life and deceptions

Rest now my children, for soon we’ll away

Into the calm and the quiet

Come little children, I’ll take thee away

Into a land of enchantment

Come little children, the time’s come to play

Here in my garden of shadows
